U9 Girls (rising):

Coach: Rob Olson and Carolyn Rice

Lead Coach Information: Rob and Carolyn are both A-licensed coaches with National Youth Licenses as well. They bring a wealth of experience including at the national level (player and coach) and college and high school level as well as with club teams. Rob played soccer at the College of William and Mary, where his team won three Virginia state championships and where he was named to the Senior Bowl, All-South, and All-State teams.  He was second all-time leading scorer when he graduated.  After graduation, Rob was a member of the 1983 US National team and then played professionally with the Georgia Generals (American Soccer League), Kalamazoo Kangaroos (AISA Indoor League), and the Washington Stars (ASL).  Since 1997, Rob has been the Director of Coaching at SYA Soccer. He has been on the Soccer Academy staff for 20 years and is the Assistant Director of Soccer Education and a coach for many of its programs. Rob currently coaches a U16 Boys team and a U10 Girls team at SYA,  and is on the VYSA coaching education staff. He holds an A license and a National Youth license. Carolyn Rice is a USSF "A" licensed coach. She has coached and played on five national youth and women’s championship teams. Coach Rice is a former U19 Women’s National Team coach and coach of the Maryland Pride women’s professional team. Carolyn Rice has coached professionally, at the collegiate level, was a member of US Youth Soccer National and Regional coaching staff, and one of the most successful high school coaches in the Metropolitan Area. She is finishing the U18 SYA FCV Hotspur, a team she began coaching when several of the girls were U9 at SYA. The Hotspur were regularly in the state championships, and the girls are committed to college soccer programs.

League: U9 girls will play in the CCL and potentially in WAGS depending on the number of teams formed.

 

U10 Girls (rising):

Melissa Bibbee

Lead Coach information: 

Melissa holds a USSF National “C” license. She has coached U9-U15 teams in Great Falls, Reston, Vienna, and SYA soccer clubs.

She was the Head Varsity Girls Coach at Langley HS for 10 years and has been the Head Varsity Girls Coach Chantilly HS for the past 6 years. She has won several titles with her high school teams and has been named All-District Coach of the Year 5 times, and was the All-Met Coach of the Year in 2010. As a player, Melissa played in WAGS with the six-time state champion Sterling Rolling Thunder, where she also was twice Region 1 Champion. A four-year starter at Herndon High, she garnered All-District and All-Region honors before moving on to the University of Delaware, where she was named 1st Team All Conference as a senior. She played a season of semi-pro soccer. Melissa is married and the mother of two young soccer playing daughters!

League: U10 girls will play in the VCCL and in WAGS.

 

U11 Girls (rising):

Lead Coach Information: Rob played soccer at the College of William and Mary, where his team won three Virginia state championships and where he was named to the Senior Bowl, All-South, and All-State teams.  He was second all-time leading scorer when he graduated.  After graduation, Rob was a member of the 1983 US National team and then played professionally with the Georgia Generals (American Soccer League), Kalamazoo Kangaroos (AISA Indoor League), and the Washington Stars (ASL).  Since 1997, Rob has been the Director of Coaching at SYA Soccer. He has been on the Soccer Academy staff for 20 years and is the Assistant Director of Soccer Education and a coach for many of its programs. Rob currently coaches a U16 Boys team and is on the VYSA coaching education staff. He holds an A license and a National Youth license.

U12 Girls (rising):

Coach: Mils Thindwa

Lead Coach Information: Mils, known affectionately as “Hollywood” to the youngest SYA players, grew up in the UK where he played in the British youth system. Mils has been a member of the Soccer Academy staff and a coach at SYA for almost a decade. He is also a coach for the Centreville High School Girls’ Varsity Team. Mils has a variety of coaching certifications, including a USSF “B” license, NSCAA advanced diploma and goalkeeping diploma, and the coveted National Youth License as well as the Coerver Coaching Certificate (which is a program designed to assist coaches teaching young players to be confortable with the ball at their feet),

League: U12 girls will participate in VCCL (first team) and in WAGS.

 

U13 Girls (rising):

Lead Coach Information: Craig has many, many years of coaching experience, He holds a “B” license and has coached at the college level. He has spent time on the ODP staff and is also involved with Soccer Academy, where he has trained players of a variety of ages.

U15 Girls (rising):

Coach: Dana Bowie

Lead Coach Information:  The team is coached and trained by Dana Bowie, USSF C license; Richard Tacaraya, USSF A license, NSCAA “Premier” Diploma, and DFB/NSCAA International Diploma; and Michael “Mac” McDonald, USSF D license. Coach Dana has 15 + years youth soccer coaching experience and coaches the team with an emphasis on developing individual player skills to their highest potential as well as developing the creative individual player. Coach Richard was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia and has been playing and learning the beautiful art of the game ever since; he is currently the Technical Director at the Soccer Revolution Academy. His unique blend of technical knowledge and personal style develops players to reach their full potential. Not only is he an extremely qualified coach, but his experience with youth soccer enables him to tailor his training to challenge players of all ages and abilities. His motivational style brings out the best in these young players. He demands effort, focus and commitment from his players and they readily respond. Players enjoy his sessions and come away having learned something new about the game. Coach Mac is a retired Air Force Officer with over a decade of coaching experience; from U-little’s to U-15G.

U16 Girls (rising):

Lead Coach Information:  Sean Burke coached the 2004 W.T. Woodson Girls Varsity Soccer team and the 2007 Thomas Jefferson Boys Varsity Soccer team to the Virginia high school state titles. Sean was the Northern Region Boys Coach of the Year in 2012. In the last ten plus years, he has worked in VCCL, ECNL, Super Y, NCSL and WAGS with all age groups. He has been an assistant for the Northern Virginia Majestic W-League team as well, guiding the Majestics Super Y U20 team to four consecutive appearances in the Super Y National Finals. He has his USSF B license as well as NSCAA goalkeeping and High School diplomas. Previously, Sean coached the McLean (BRYC) Azul before coming to SYA. He runs summer camps for players preparing for college seasons annually, helping 30+ players a year with their college summer workouts and conditioning programs. He played his college soccer at Wittenburg, garnering both athletic and academic honors before going on to play semi-pro ball for Empire State (western New York men’s team) while earning a Masters in Counseling. He is a guidance counselor at Thomas Jefferson High School.

Lead Coach Information: Coach McKenna has a vast amount of experience coaching in both the United States and in his native Ireland. He was the Northern Ireland u17 Girls International Head Coach,  has coached in the US National League, Region One and VYSA State Cup  and most recently, took the U16 PWSI 95 Gold  to the 2010 State Cup Finals, won the 2010 Region One Championship, 2011 State Cup Final Four, 2011 National League where they finished in 5th place,  and to the Region I finals where they finished third 2011/12 Region I.

Lead Coach Information: Chris played for the professional clubs of Leeds United and Barnsley FC before moving to America after college. He holds a Sports Science degree from Edge Hill University, where he was a member of the Division 1 National Championship title in 2001. Chris is a USSF C license coach and has been with SYA since 2008.

He played professional soccer with Charlton Athletic FC (1996 to 1998), and semi-professional soccer with both Greenwich Borough FC (1998 to 2000) and Slade Green FC (2000 to 2002). Dean’s qualifications include USSF (A, B, C), UEFA (B, C) and the NSCAA National Youth Licenses. Dean’s goal is to raise each player’s game so they will be able to perform at the highest level possible.  This means developing each player in terms of technique, individual tactics, fitness, understanding the principles of play, and team tactics. He also stresses character traits such as self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility, and overcoming adversity.

Lead Coach Information: Paul Ellis is a USSF A License Coach, a National Youth License, an NSCAA Premier Coach. He is currently on the US Girls National Team coaching staff, and was previously head coach to Region 1 teams playing internationally in China, Germany , France, Denmark and Britain.

Lead Coach: Fitz Lawrence

Lead Coach Information: Coach Fitz holds a USSF A soccer coaching license. In addition to the Comets, he also coached the SYA Lions NCSL Division 1 team from U9-U18.  His players have moved on to colleges such as Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech, George Mason, and University of Maryland.  Coach Fitz played at New York Institute of Technology, then for the Colorado Comets, SV Hegnach and FC Maritimo during his playing career. Coach Fitz has a terrific ability to relate to his players and is very approachable, both on and off the soccer field.  He is focused on improving the players’ soccer abilities and their overall development as young responsible citizens.  Coach Fitz received his degree in Computer Science from Park University and earned a Master of Science Degree in Telecommunications from the University of Maryland.

Lead Coach Information: Jac Cicala is a legend among Virginia coaches. Some of his qualifications include: 13 Years George Mason University (Head Coach Women): NCAA National Finalist; 5 Years Robinson High School Boys head coach (Runner Up State Champion); 4 Years Centreville High School Boys head coach; 10 Years Lake Braddock High School Boys Head Coach (won 4 State Championships); 42 Years  Club Coach  (Boys and Girls Teams): Multiple State Championships/Regional Titles; 18 Years  Region 1 ODP Head Girls Coach; 20 Years  VYSA Staff Instructor for coach licensing courses; Coach of the Year-Division 1 Colleges; Coach of the Year- Boys High School; Coach of the Year- Boys Club Coach; VYSA Hall of Fame Inductee. Lead Coach Information: A former professional soccer player for England’s Rotherham United Football Club, Stevie has been coaching in the area for over a decade. He played his collegiate ball at George Mason, where he was fourth in the nation in scoring (2003). He holds a UEFA “B” license.
